Description

A 1W High-Power LED is a high-intensity solid-state lighting component designed to deliver maximum illumination efficiency for demanding electronic and optical projects. Unlike standard 5mm indicators, high-power LEDs are engineered to replace traditional incandescent or fluorescent light sources in compact form factors.

Key Features & Specifications

  • Power Rating: 1 Watt (operates efficiently under regulated current conditions).

  • Forward Voltage ($V_f$): Typically ranges from 3.0V to 3.6V DC (depending on the color temperature, such as cool white vs. warm white).

  • Operating Current ($I_f$): Standard operating current is 300 mA to 350 mA.

  • Luminous Output: Produces high brightness (typically 80–110 lumens depending on binning) with a wide viewing angle (often 120° to 140° Lambertian pattern).

  • Thermal Design: Mounted on a standardized aluminum-core PCB “star” plate, which acts as a preliminary heat spreader to draw thermal energy away from the semiconductor junction.

Common Applications

  • Flashlights & Headlamps: Used for high-efficiency portable lighting and custom flashlight modifications.

  • Robotics & Indicators: High-visibility status indicators or vision system illumination in robotics.

  • DIY & Educational Projects: Prototyping illumination setups in lab kits and embedded control systems.

Critical Usage Guidelines

  • Constant Current Driving: Never connect a 1W high-power LED directly to a constant voltage source (like a 3.3V or 5V power rail) without a current-limiting resistor or a dedicated constant-current driver. Because their forward voltage drops as temperature rises, direct voltage drive causes thermal runaway, pulling excessive current and destroying the LED almost instantly.

  • Heat Dissipation: Although the star PCB helps dissipate heat, running the LED at full 350mA power for extended periods requires mounting the star plate onto a secondary aluminum heat sink or using thermal paste.
